Classes & Workshops

Classes & Workshops

Join us for special classes & workshops to take your hands-on learning to the next level! The Children's Museum offers a clean & safe environment, and all programs will be spread out to allow for social distancing.

In partnership with Dr. Heather Hill of Parenting For Equity and Social Justice, CMC is excited to launch a new class series Story Times for Equity and Social Justice.

Each 30-minute class will include an interactive read-aloud where a picture book will be used to mediate developmentally-appropriate discussion about issues of equity and social justice with young children. Classes will also include a cooperative activity or opportunity for creative play. Caregivers will receive a handout with an extension activity that can be used to sustain conversations about issues of equity begun during the session.

This program will support children in engaging with picture books in ways that build community among the participants, engender positive associations between differences in skin color and concepts of beauty, intelligence, and kindness, and strengthen language and literacy development in young children.

Why is this work important?

Recent research shows that children as young as infancy are already aware of differences in skin color, and children as young as 2 are already beginning to form and internalize beliefs about what those differences mean, and how and why they exist. Beginning a dialogue early and often can help create a strong foundation of understanding and prevent negative biases from forming.

This program is provided through generous support from the Billie Howland Steffee Family Fund at the Cleveland Foundation.

Did you know?

Children can recognize race-based differences as early as 6 months old and can internalize racial bias by ages 2-4.

Talking about racial equity with kids can be difficult, but it’s essential - and we’re here to help!

Join us!

The Children’s Museum of Cleveland and Dr. Heather Hill of Parenting for Equity & Social Justice are hosting Racial Equity Workshops for Parents this winter. These workshops will provide a safe and judgement-free environment where parents and caregivers can learn from an expert, ask questions, engage in dialogue, and even practice some new skills.

Who is this workshop designed for?

Our racial equity programs are designed to support families of all racial and socioeconomic backgrounds on their educational journey. This workshop expands on the information covered in our Let's Talk toolkit.

If you are new to CMC's racial equity resources, or have engaged with the Let's Talk toolkit but want to engage more, this workshop is for you! If you have participated in our Parent & Caregiver Learning Community meetings with CSU, you may have covered this information already.
